Let’s not succumb to the myth that everybody was just plain nicer in the 1960s.

MacFarland sent a nice letter because Campbell’s are in the soup business and make money when people buy more soup. Warhol’s paintings were not making any (blatant) negative statements about soup or the company. It’s quite possible that Campbell’s even experienced a small increase in sales thanks to attention from Warhol’s art. (It seems dumb but often all it takes to get a human to buy something is to repeat it a lot around him.)

Meanwhile, Warhol was in the art business, not the soup business, so any money he was making wasn’t money that Campbell’s could conceivably have a claim to.

So, why not send the harmless little guy a case of tomato soup?
