I would add that it fits under “fight ignorance with love”, and that, using your example, a character they know and love coming out can be almost as good as a person they know and love coming out.
Oh, absolutely. Why else would people make such a fuss (on both sides) about Captain Kirk kissing Lt. Uhura, or Maude having an abortion, or Murphy Brown choosing to be a single mother, or Ellen DeGeneres coming out of the closet, or Kathryn Janeway commanding the U.S.S. Voyager, or Cliff Huxtable being a gynecologist?
