In January, Southwest Airlines will stop flying between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, leaving US Airways as the only airline with a direct route between the two cities. So what is US Airways going to do? Hike its fares.
US Airways has a long history of being a shitty company. Ever wonder why Pittsburgh has such a nice airport? Throughout the ’90s, Pittsburgh was a US Airways hub, and the airline was constantly threatening to relocate in order to get tax breaks and other favors from the city and county government. They even got the county to help build a totally new airport for them — and then moved away anyway.
I haven’t flown US Airways in years and I never will again. If you’re traveling between Pittsburgh and Philly, I strongly recommend you consider Amtrak: it looks slower on paper, but when you factor in travel to the airport, getting your junk irradiated/fondled by TSA, sitting with your knees under your chin, and so on, the train is a delight.
Bonus: if you want to know why you can never get a straight answer about the price of an airline ticket, read this.
