I’m getting on the formspring train. But since my personal life is not that interesting, and I’m a know-it-all with a compulsion to offer explanation without provocation, I invite you to use it to ask me anything about anything. You can also use it to state an opinion and I’ll disagree with you.
My aunt wants Myst, (the computer game) for christmas, but since it’s not 1995, what’s something LIKE that. For a PC, and there is mystery, but you don’t shoot people/aliens.
also, how do you make things questions on tumblr?
Tere are a lot of games out there, mostly for download. BigFishGames has tons. Sadly most don’t have the attention to detail and production value (especially sound design) of Myst (they also tend to cost a lot less).
BigFishGames’s slogan on their website is “A New Game Every Day!” That says it all. They break my heart each time I find one of their games on the App Store, thinking I’ve found a new honest-to-goodness adventure game, only to discover it’s one of their “find the hidden object” crap.
I have a lot of fond memories of playing adventure games with my brother and my dad. The Black Cauldron, King’s Quest, Space Quest, Monkey Island, Gabriel Knight, Conquest of the Longbow, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, Police Quest, Maniac Mansion, Day of the Tentacle, Sam & Max Hit The Road. The genre as a whole died out as the games became more expensive to produce (near the end they were basically producing animated movies) and shoot ‘em ups became much, much more profitable.
Ever since I learned how to program I’ve wanted to create my own adventure game. I secretly* dream that someday I’ll meet the Roberta to my Ken and together we’ll make the game that brings back the genre.
FYI, you could get your aunt Myst in 2009, but not for a PC… Cyan Worlds has made a version of the game for iPhone/iPod touch.
Chelsea, thanks for reading my rantings; you might find some good stuff here: games made with Adventure Game Studio for PC.
Also, you make posts into questions by ending them with a question mark and then checking the box that magically appears on the right.
* Shhhhh!
Sad pile of jam and cigarettes I found on the sidewalk one night. Don’t know why someone threw their cigarettes in jam, but I can GUESS. Sheesh… you kids and your disgusting sex games.
Guybrush: What’s in the keg?
Tall Pirate: Jam. / Short Pirate: Rum.

Tall Pirate: Er… rum and jam. It’s an old pirate favorite. Everybody knows that.
It took me about two hours to get home. The Fat Penguin Show ended a little after midnight, and everybody had plans or wanted to go straight home. A large portion of the two hours was spent standing on the 42nd Street ACE platform, listening to the public address system. Because of rail damage, E trains were being held, for service between 23rd St and 50th St take an A local train instead. Later, it was because of debris on the track. Later, it was because of an earlier incident. Finally, an E train arrived.
But I wasn’t waiting for the E. I was waiting for that A local train, that I assumed would be coming since it was repeatedly recommended as an alternative. Eventually I gave up and walked a block underground to the 123 track. I’m sure the A arrived at the platform shortly after I left. Fortunately I did not have to wait much longer for a 1 train. But it did mean I had a longer walk through the snow.
