How to Learn to Program in 2010 →
This is a response to a friend, Nate Dern, a smart guy who wants to learn to program but doesn’t know where to start. Spoiler alert: I rant for a while and then briefly answer his question at the…

I have an embarrassingly basic question for you. I'm starting to study sociology in grad school. I want to study online social media. I'm already learning that computer scientists, who can write programs to collect the data they're interested from social media sites, have pretty much got the market cornered in terms of gathering...

Chuck Lorre Productions, Vanity Card #306
I have been writing sitcoms for twenty-five years. During this time, I have learned a few things. Practical things. Do’s and don’t’s if you will.
For instance, do hire actors based on talent not looks. Somewhere between take eight and take fifteen, you will be hating both yourself and the gorgeous, but clueless ingenue who got the job...

At school today, I saw way more people than I expected to see wearing purple. I live in a very small town in North Carolina, and there are a lot of racists and homophobes.
Today, I saw at least three of our football players and two of the coaches wearing purple from head to toe.

Tumblr search for "purple" →
I confess: I entered “purple” into the search box because I wondered if any assholes were flipping out because Tumblr changed their Dashboard color without their permission.
Now I’m seven pages in and getting a little bit misty eyed.

They asked people to read something written in Comic Sans, which they determined to be one of the toughest fonts to read, perhaps because it’s ridiculous. Another group read the same material in easy-to-read Arial. After all that, they tested their comprehension. And, in a shocker, the people who read in Comic Sans retained far more information than those who read in Arial.

The Brothers Hines did a show this past Friday at Marymount Manhattan College where I made a reference to the Musicians of Bremen and not only did the audience grow silent and confused but Will was even stymied. And he seems to know everything! This followed a class from a few weeks back where I referenced the Musicians of Bremen and got puzzled grunts. Now you might be asking, why...

I had this idea for a tv show. The main character is a sex offender moving into a new neighborhood. Each week he goes to the house of a different person on the block. They invite him into their house and he has to tell them he’s a sex offender. But each week the person who invites him in is pretty f’ed up too.
Just think it’d be cool.
I will finance* this.

Vag Magazine Episode 1, “Fumbling Toward Ecstasy”
Vag Magazine founders Sylvie, Fennel, and Bethany lay out their editorial vision for Vag shortly after buying out fashion magazine Gemma with the proceeds from their Etsy shop. Staffers Heavy Flo and Reba are on board, but lone Gemma holdover Meghan is skeptical.

Guys, how does one go about copyrighting a script they are writing? I’m assuming you can pay a fee and register it somewhere, so that no one can take your original show or movie idea (because they are so great people will immediately want to steal them, in this scenario). However, my big clumsy fingers aren’t finding it on the Google. Any suggestions?

Aaron Sorkin wrote a super interesting defense of the gender politics of The Social Network in the comments of writer Ken Levine’s blog. Though I can see why someone might be offended by the movie’s portrayal of women, I actually got what Sorkin was going for in terms of portraying a misogynist subculture and I thought the movie had some really interesting points about gender...

You Should Be Rewarded For Paying Attention
Last night I played hooky from an improv class for a screening of Get Lamp, a documentary about text adventures, hosted by the filmmaker, Jason Scott. It was pretty great.
During the Q&A, Jason talked about watching some Discovery Channel shows with the sound off, to study how they shot certain things. And it bugged the hell out of him that they kept reusing the same clip of a bear, over and...
