Hulu Desktop! → techcrunch.com

mikescollins:

Wow.  I’m another step further towards throwing out my TV.  (No, I’m not.)

http://www.hulu.com/labs/hulu-desktop

Installs beautifully on my iMac G5. Video seems to play at about 1 frame every 10 seconds. Somehow Flash Player is slower in a standalone app than as a browser plug-in. Good work, Adobe.

“Operating system people get no respect. All the hoopla and credit goes to the folks six APIs above your stuff, who move pixels around and make “ZIP-BOOM” noises while wasting cycles with horrible abandon. No one cares about the coal miners who pull those cycles out of the raw earth to begin with, it’s all about the actors using the light made by your coal.” —DadHacker  » Blog Archive  » A little more wisdom

Cough and cold

benjaminapple:

My Granddad is 81 and has a very dry sense of humor. Before leaving for church he said that when you take cold medicine you get better in a week, and when you don’t, you get better in a week.

For what it’s worth, my cousin is 32 and a doctor and recently told me the exact same thing.

Tech guys make the best lovers? → thesun.co.uk

This has been known at least since ‘84, when Lambda Lambda Lambda fraternity brother Lewis disguised himself with a Darth Vader mask and asked Pi Delta Pi sister Betty, “Do you wanna do it on the moon?”

surefire way

rubysneakers:

to feel pathetic: drink straight from 2 liter bottle of soda in front of the tv.

I have some pretty shameful eating habits, but I am proud to say this is something I’ve never done.

I just joined twitter. I don’t know why. I don’t even have a computer phone or whatever you people use. Anyway, I’m writing to let you know because this probably signals its demise. Sorry ‘bout that.

From now on I am going to tell people that I program computer phones for a living.

Does Announcing Your Goals Help You Succeed? → newsweek.com

The answer is no, it will in fact make you even less productive than if you had kept your goals to yourself, but it will paradoxically make you feel better about yourself.

Estimating the changes in energy flux that characterize the rise in obesity prevalence -- Swinburn et al., 10.3945/ajcn.2008.27061 -- American Journal of Clinical Nutrition → ajcn.org

I think this is the publication that the previous article was referring to. I hate that science journalists never bother to clearly cite the research that is the entire basis for their articles.

“This is a call to focus public health attention more on the energy intake side. There is no evidence that a marked reduction in physical activity has been a contributor to this epidemic.” —Professor Boyd Swinburn, quoted in Diet, not lack of exercise, to blame for obesity - Times Online. In other words, anybody who claims people used to get more exercise is wrong.

No, it would not be great.

benjaminapple:

It’d be great if there was a site called HasSomebodyAlready.com specifically for posting questions like, “Has somebody already done a sketch with Albert Einstein going around sarcastically calling everyone Einstein?”

That would only fuel the anxiety that kills creativity. It would only serve to stop you from making something before you have started.

Listen to Paul Rand: “Don’t try to be original. Just try to be good.”
